I am a Materials Engineer and MSc researcher at the University of Manitoba, passionate about developing advanced materials that improve engineering performance and quality of life. My research spans composite materials, biomaterials, surface engineering, and the mechanical behavior of materials, with a strong interest in bridging experimental research and computational modeling.My academic journey began at the University of Tehran, where I earned my Bachelor's degree in Materials and Metallurgical Engineering. During my undergraduate studies, I worked extensively on titanium-based composites for biomedical applications, focusing on improving both mechanical performance and antibacterial properties. This research led to scientific publications and conference presentations, further strengthening my passion for materials innovation.Currently, as a Graduate Research Assistant in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Manitoba, I am expanding my expertise toward sustainable and high-performance materials, including polymeric composites and environmentally friendly engineering solutions. I enjoy working on multidisciplinary projects that connect materials science, manufacturing, and mechanical engineering to solve real-world challenges.Beyond research, I have experience as a teaching assistant, industry quality control manager, and undergraduate researcher. Biography & Research Journey

My research explores how composition, processing, and microstructure can be tailored to improve the performance of composite materials. Rather than focusing on a single class of materials, I am interested in understanding how different material systems can be engineered to achieve specific mechanical and functional properties.<h4>Composite Materials</h4>Composite materials have been the central theme of my research, from titanium-based systems developed for biomedical applications to natural fiber-reinforced polymer composites for sustainable engineering. Although these materials serve different purposes, they share a common challenge: designing microstructures that balance performance with application-specific requirements.<h4>Processing–Structure Relationships</h4>A key aspect of my work is investigating how fabrication routes influence the internal structure of composite materials and, ultimately, their mechanical behavior. I am particularly interested in the relationships between processing conditions, microstructural evolution, and material performance, as these interactions provide the foundation for rational materials design.<h4>Functional Materials</h4>My research has involved material systems designed to meet functional requirements beyond structural performance. By introducing strontium oxide into a Ti–6Cu system, the study demonstrates that a carefully selected composition can simultaneously improve bioactivity, maintain antibacterial performance, and enhance wear resistance. When people think about materials for biomedical implants, mechanical strength is often the first property that comes to mind. A stronger material should perform better,right?In reality, designing a successful implant material is a balancing act between multiple, sometimes competing, requirements.A material must withstand mechanical loads, resist wear during long-term service, discourage bacterial growth, and support healthy interactions with surrounding tissue. Improving one property often comes at the expense of another, making materials design a process of optimization rather than maximization.This challenge motivated my recent research on titanium-based composites reinforced with strontium oxide. Rather than pursuing the highest antibacterial activity or the greatest hardness alone, the goal was to identify a composition that achieved the best overall balance between biological functionality and mechanical performance.One of the most interesting outcomes of the study was that the optimal material was not the composition with the highest amount of reinforcement. Instead, an intermediate composition provided the most favorable combination of antibacterial behavior, bioactivity, wear resistance, and structural performance.To me, this illustrates one of the most fascinating aspects of materials engineering: successful materials are rarely defined by a single property. They emerge from carefully balancing multiple performance requirements to meet the needs of real-world applications.This way of thinking, optimizing trade-offs rather than maximizing individual properties-continues to shape how I approach materials research.

Why Designing Biomaterials Is More Than Just Improving Strength?

At first glance, bulk materials appear continuous and uniform. Yet at the atomic scale, every material is simply a collection of atoms interacting with one another through interatomic forces. Many of the properties we measure at the macroscopic level—strength, elasticity, thermal behavior, and diffusion—are ultimately rooted in these atomic interactions.One of the concepts that fascinated me while learning computational materials science is the cutoff radius. Although it may seem like a simple numerical parameter, it plays a fundamental role in atomistic simulations.Atoms interact most strongly with their nearest neighbors. As the distance between atoms increases, the interaction energy gradually decreases until it becomes negligible. Rather than calculating interactions between every possible pair of atoms—which would quickly become computationally impractical—simulations define a cutoff radius. Atoms inside this boundary contribute to the calculation, while those beyond it are ignored.This simplification dramatically reduces computational cost without sacrificing much accuracy, provided that the cutoff distance is chosen carefully.Finding that balance, however, is not trivial.In crystal structures such as FCC metals, atoms are arranged in distinct coordination shells. If the cutoff radius is too small, important neighboring shells may be excluded, leading to inaccurate predictions. If it is too large, computational cost increases significantly with little additional benefit.There is another constraint that is often overlooked: the simulation cell itself. Under periodic boundary conditions, the maximum usable cutoff radius depends on the size of the simulation box. A cell that is too small limits how far atomic interactions can extend, regardless of the chosen potential.The visualization accompanying this article illustrates this idea using an FCC lattice with the Lennard–Jones potential. As the interatomic distance increases, the interaction energy rapidly approaches zero, making it clear why selecting an appropriate cutoff is both a physical and computational decision.What I find most interesting is that a parameter many newcomers treat as a software setting is, in reality, a modeling decision. It determines how much of an atom's neighborhood is represented in the simulation and therefore influences how faithfully we can predict the behavior of real materials.The more I study computational materials science, the more I appreciate that reliable simulations depend not only on sophisticated models, but also on understanding the assumptions behind every parameter we choose.
